Can plebiscites placate a piqued party?

It’s not just Julie Bishop talking about plebiscite preselections.

Government sources say the issue got a very good workout in today’s first Coalition party room meeting after the election.

The matter of giving all ordinary members of the Liberal Party a say in who should be parliamentary, Flat White understands, was first raised by Eric Abetz, endorsed by Tony Abbott – and then received the blessing of the Prime Minister.

It won’t heal all the largely self-inflicted wounds plaguing the government but may just dull the pain.

For embracing plebiscites is hugely significant. It’s an acknowledgement things have to change.

And as the 12-steppers always say, admitting you have a problem is essential for a clean start.
