At this time of general opprobrium for Britain by the more vociferous officials of the European Union, most particularly Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the Union, accusing David Cameron of ‘cowardice’, it might be the moment to recall periods in history when Britain was looked upon as the saviour of Europe.
