Trump is simply following John Howard over borders

BOSTON, UNITED STATES — The anti-Trump alarmism is getting a bit tiresome. At this point, we have to assume the Left will break into fits of hysterical sobs every time the President blows his nose.

Take their response to the new immigration ban. There are massive protests underway right here in Boston as I type. (I’d love to pop down for a look-see but I don’t want to catch anything.) One Beantowner summed up their gripe nicely when she said, ‘I think the idea of a religious- and ethnicity-based test to allow people to come into the country is unconstitutional and un-American.’

Let’s get a few things straight first. (B) This is not a Muslim ban. The five countries with the highest population of Muslims – Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nigeria – aren’t included. (C) The ban is perfectly constitutional. US Code Title 8 Section 1182 states that

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

(D) The ban is temporary and will be lifted when more strenuous vetting measures – which are badly needed – are put in place. (E) Barack Obama did the same thing back in 2011 without so much as a peep from the Left. (F) Except for Somalia, all the countries on Trump’s list themselves ban Israelis.

This all comes back to the big issue, which is so important I saved the first bullet for it: (A) Sovereign nations have the right to open and close their borders at their discretion.

Every argument about immigration in the 21st century ultimately comes down to this basic premise. Pro-immigration radicals act as though anyone who wishes to come to the US, Australia, the UK or any other Western nation is entitled to do so. I mean, think of how absurd it is to call Trump’s ban ‘unconstitutional’. Do these people really think that the unconditional right of all foreigners everywhere to immigrate to the United States is enshrined in the Constitution?

Trump is simply putting into action John Howard’s 2001 declaration of national sovereignty. He, too, is saying, ‘we will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come.’ He’s unapologetically asserting that governments have an absolute duty to protect and serve its own citizens that trumps all promises or commitments to non-citizens.
