In April, Tasmania legislated birth certificate reforms, making gender on birth certificates optional, and removes the requirement for transgender people to have surgery in order to have their gender recognised. Earlier in June, Victoria proposed similar but less radical legislation, where children could apply to alter the gender on their birth certificate but only with the backing of their parents and a supporting statement from a doctor, registered psychologist or authorised party who can confirm it would be in the child’s best interest.
