Oh, to be a fly on the wall when the Politbureau of Danandrewstan meets.
Today’s concessions on the Pandemic Bill are token concessions, but they are still concessions.
And it’s not so long ago that, after his New South Wales counterpart Dominic Perrottet shifted up a gear, that the Dictator himself was forced to stir and get Victoria moving out of lockdown.
Neither of these have been massive departures from the script, but Daniel Andrews nevertheless has moved.
Also, curiously, Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton yesterday had a paper published in the Medical Journal of Australia that appeared to at least acknowledge the economic damage of lockdown, though this was largely hidden in the strange language of leftist bureaucrats they speak in Victoria — and the government said the Premier’s sidekick was speaking for himself.
His Twitter propagandists are still pumping out their #IStandWithDan nonsense but one of their chiefs who goes by the handle of “PR Guy” verged into Comical Ali territory after Saturday’s rallies.
The public hearings by the state’s Independent Broad-Based Commission Against Corruption in Labor branch stacking have finished, but enough shit came out to paint the state parliament on Spring Street brown twice over.
The Liberal opposition remain useless, but the signs are there that something in changing in Victoria.
It’s not so much #IStandWithDan but #DanIsWobbling.
Overreach — draconian legislation like the Pandemic Bill (don’t forget the earlier legislation the SpecOz did so much to block before) and the contempt for the law revealed in IBAC — is harming Andrews.
And so Dan is having to move, ever so slightly, but to move nonetheless.
He’s learnt what it’s like to tumble down the stairs.
