Your example of the CSA seceding from the Union is possibly not the best one to pick, given it triggered a war that resulted in over a million casualties.
Now, I’m not saying that the UK walking away from the EU, as proposed by Daniel Hannan, will trigger a war, but as I and KeiraJ have been saying, if you act unilaterally by breaking a treaty, there will be consequences.
