I attended what in the US is called a magnet school, which would fit within the parameters of the UK grammar school model (albeit with a later start year). I shudder to think what would have happened to me, otherwise. I had good parents who had no money, so the only other option was my local comprehensive, which was a good school when my parents moved in but a violent and underachieving one by the time I was old enough to attend.
