One reason that the Yew became popular in Christian times was because the churches didnt like paying for anything they could avoid.
They planted Yew trees in churchyards because it was lethal to cattle. The farmers would then build walls around the churchyards to protect their livestock, and the church didnt have to fork out the cash.
