Cabinet solidarity stops him from saying so publicly, but owlish-looking New South Wales Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, has set his stall to succeed Gladys Berejiklian.
Perrottet’s call to end the NSW lockdown this Saturday as originally planned ran counter to the Premier and his other cabinet colleagues. His concern about the wider social and economic damage of the lockdown is an open break from Berejiklian who may be reluctant to continue, but continuing she is.
It appears, though, that Perrottet’s stand has had some good. The premier yesterday seemed to be assuring the public that it’s one extra week and no more, and Brad ‘Health’ Hazzard talked honestly (a change for him) about the reality of learning to live with Covid rather than eliminate it.
The week’s NSW lockdown extension can’t now be reversed. But it can at least be the start of showing some national leadership on adapting to the Covid reality rather than cowering under the doona like frightened toddlers in a thunderstorm.
