Did you know that being vaccinated against the Covid virus is mandatory in Australia? You didn’t? Well, neither did I until I read the reasons that Alex Hawke, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs, filed in the Federal Court for revoking Novak Djokovic’s visa.
At paragraph 22, Mr Hawke states: ‘I consider that Mr Djokovic’s presence in Australia may pose a health risk to the Australian community, in that his presence in Australia may foster anti-vaccination sentiment;’ to which he added some particulars, like people refusing to be vaccinated or those not having a booster.
You probably thought, as I did, that in a free country people could make up their own minds whether to be vaccinated. You hoped that they would, but if they didn’t and took the risk not to be, then let the dice fall where it may. Not so, it seems.
The governments of our Commonwealth do not believe in free choice; abortion and euthanasia, yes, but vaccination, no. For one thing, I actually thought that vaccinations were a state government responsibility and as far as I know, Victoria hasn’t mandated vaccination – although Daniel Andrews would love to.
But Mr Hawke goes further. Not only does the federal government want everyone to be vaccinated, it wants to stop anyone who isn’t vaccinated and who resists being vaccinated (even if they are exempt from being vaccinated) from becoming – wait for it – a role model for the unvaccinated. If they suspect someone has become a role model for the unvaccinated, that person will be deported back to whence they came.
It seems the very existence in this country of an unvaccinated person might become a flag around which weak-minded Australians will rally and challenge our government. One hopes the government has evidence to support such a bizarre allegation, beyond mere inferences of psychological propensity.
But, I hear you say, what about all those people in Australia who already object to being vaccinated and who quite cheerfully share their opinions at every opportunity? If we accept the Morrison government’s argument, they must be silenced, and if they can’t be silenced either lock them up or perhaps deport them. Like President Xi of the Communist Party of China, Scott Morrison brooks no resistance to his rule.
To be clear, I have been doubly vaccinated and boosted against Covid and am fully okay with being in the company of the unvaccinated and unclean. If the various public health policies are looked at objectively, they have been designed to keep the unvaccinated, particularly those with already compromised health, alive.
The vaccination of children is designed to keep the teachers alive for the virus has little effect on children.
These last two years have been hell, a hell caused by state government public health policies that ignored the possibility of such a virulent virus until it was too late, allowing intensive care investments in both fixed and variable requirements, for which they were responsible, to fall too far behind.
Simply put, the public health officials who plan public health investments did not provide for a pandemic which required such a significant uptake of intensive care. Had people been permitted to travel freely, there were neither the ICU beds nor the trained ICU staff available were they to become ill.
The policies that the Australian people have been obliged to tolerate for two years were made to defend earlier, incompetent public health decisions. As a result, judgment was made to avoid the bad optics of sick people queueing in hospital corridors by making them queue at state borders.
That the science is ambiguous as between the vaccinated and unvaccinated was demonstrated clearly just a week ago when Dr Kerryn Phelps’ advice to parents not to send their unvaccinated children back to school was overridden by Australia’s former Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Nick Coatsworth who responded, ‘Ignore this individual.’
One of those two should be deported. The only interesting question is, which one?
