Here it is! I have finally found one word that will describe the Liberal party in its present state— ‘agathokakological’. The Oxford notes that it is ‘rare’ (and it’s certainly that!) with only two citations recorded since its birth into the English language in 1834. Mind you, the more recent of those is from Australia – from the Herald Sun in 2008. This single word ‘agathokakological’ describes something which is neither good nor bad but a bit of both. And isn’t that the Liberal party today? It comes from two Greek roots ‘agathos’ (good) and ‘kakos’ (bad). What’s bad about the Liberal party is clear enough: net zero by 2050, the failure to tackle the ABC, or to tackle the culture wars in general, the surrender to the states over Covid, the failure to defend religious freedom, the wokeness of the so-called Moderates, the suicidal failure of the NSW branch to preselect candidates because of factional wars… no, no, I have to stop or I’ll go on for pages. And what’s good about the Liberal party? It’s not the Labor party! It’s what stands between us and an Albanese government. That’s the ‘agathokakological’ Liberal party. (Modest, muted celebration is appropriate.)
