During my primary schooling in Iran in the early 1970s, I worked at my dad’s workshop every morning and attended classes in the afternoon. My school, like some other public schools, ran separate morning and afternoon shifts to meet the work demands of its students. Sometimes I was so tired I fell asleep in class, resulting in embarrassing punishment in front of my classmates.
