Paul Benioff (1930-2022) was a US physicist who wrote a paper in 1980 that imagined the feats computing might achieve if it could harness quantum mechanics, where the word quantum refers to the tiniest amount of something needed to interact with something else – it’s basically the world of atoms and sub-atomic particles.
