July marked the 110th Anniversary of the start of the first world war, although few noticed it. The West is distracted. The US is in the middle of a tight presidential election campaign. In the UK, there were nationwide race riots in which the new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, placed the blame entirely on one side – the ‘far right’ – and proposed a clamp down on social media companies and the introduction of live facial recognition technology.
